FOREST AND SHRUBLAND INVENTORY
Data gathered from forest inventory plots provides comprehensive information about the state and dynamics of forests. The data allows us to calculate, among other things, the number of trees per acre, the basal area (the area covered by trees), the volume of trees, and the value of the timber. These calculations provide a scientific basis for strategic and management planning of forest areas.
Beaver Ponds personnel have established over 34 circular, 1/5-acre inventory plots in forest areas and in the sagebrush dominated slope north of Sacramento Creek. Several plots are located in areas where we are also conducting fire mitigation to measure species responses to removal and trimming of canopy trees. In addition to sources of important data, the plots will be used as teaching tools where students and visitors can learn forest inventory techniques, tree and shrub identification, and ecological classification.
