HERBCHRONOLOGY

Herbchronology is an area of scientific investigation that measures the yearly growth of herbs that display annual growth rings similar to trees.  With funding from South Park Natural Heritage Area, dendrochronologists from the Missouri Tree Ring Laboratory, University of Missouri, along with Beaver Ponds staff and volunteers identified and collected samples from a combination of herb species during the summer of 2016. This study complements the dendrochronology study conducted in 2015 (click here to read about this study of tree rings) and adds to ongoing alpine plant and pollinator research that has been done on Pennsylvania Mountain for nearly 40 years. Researchers now have a better understanding of age distribution along with an idea of the influences of micro-climate on growth rates of alpine plant.  Learn more in this blog post.
