For 2019 we are beginning a new column that will provide you with monthly suggestions on how you can make less of an impact on the world around you. Our tips will be based on the 5 Rs and beyond: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle!

Our first tip is reusable produce bags. For your next shopping trip – take this buddy with you! Reusable produce bags can be purchased online for a minimal price. I prefer cloth mesh or plain cloth bags that can be washed. If this is not an option for you then save the plastic produce bags you collect at the store and gently wash them with warm water and soap for reuse each trip. You will be surprised at how long they will last and how this small act reduces your plastic footprint significantly. I recommend keeping your produce bags in your reusable shopping bags in the trunk of your car, so you don’t have to worry about forgetting them when you go to the store!
