WIND TURBINE

Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy when the turbine blades are moved by the wind, which then turns the shaft of a generator to create electricity. The higher the wind speeds, the more power turbines can produce. Taller towers and blades capable of sweeping large circles help capture high wind speeds.

Beaver Ponds EEC uses a Bergey Excel 10 three-blade wind turbine, which has a rotor diameter of 23 feet and sits atop a 73-foot tall tower. With 25 mph winds, the Excel 10 will produce 8.9 kW, but it is capable of producing electricity in wind speeds as low as 5 mph. Due to the lack of sustainable winds and its physical location, the Beaver Ponds EEC wind turbine seldom experiences optimal conditions for sustained energy generation, but it is still valuable as a educational tool about the mechanics of wind turbines and wind power.

There are about 155,000 small wind generators installed in U.S. Wind generates about 2,332 megawatts installed wind capacity in Colorado, including commercial wind farms.

Nature & Beautiful Ideas

Listening to the radio a week ago I heard a physicist having a conversation about beauty and nature. He asked the question. Does nature inspire beautiful ideas? A beautiful idea can come in many forms: a math equation, a poem, a sculpture, an educational approach, crafts, a song, a design, literature, social solutions, environmental solutions, a different perspective on reality, the possibilities are limitless. Different ideas may come from sitting by a stream or strolling through the woods than in other situations. Nature does inspire beautiful ideas.
